Flávio Reis

Flávio Reis is Principal Investigator at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), where coordinates the Research Management Office, and is leader of the research group Metabolic risk and nutrition at the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) from UC. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and his research focuses on therapeutic and nutraceutical strategies for cardiometabolic and renal diseases, namely diabetes and its vascular complications, with a particular interest in gut microbiota-based interventions. With near 30 years of experience in research with animal models, he is a recognized expert in Laboratory Animal Sciences and animal welfare, as well as co-inventor of the European patent Hapillness related with animal refinement and co-founder of the Spin-off RDefine. He has coordinated or participated in more than 60 funded projects (>4M€), supervised over 130 students, and authored >180 international peer-reviewed papers (>7,500 citations; H-index 48). He is President of the Portuguese Society of Pharmacology and actively engaged in science communication and health literacy.
